Jennifer Chen, Chair
Jennifer Chen is the Director of Programming and Acquisitions at Channel Zero managing four channels in Canada: Movieola- The Short Film Channel, Silver Screen Classics, CHCH of Southwestern Ontario and CJNT, the ethnic channel in Montreal. She was formerly the General Manager of Ouat Media, managing one of the largest distribution companies specializing in the acquisition, distribution and sales of short form content internationally. Her previous festival and sales experience include the Canadian Film Centre, the Toronto International Film Festival and the Cannes Film Festival. Jennifer studied cinema at the Sorbonne in Paris for a year before returning to Canada, where she worked in feature film production and directed and produced her own short films. Jennifer has shared her knowledge of the film industry with audiences at film festivals around the world, consulted on distribution strategies for award-winning shorts, published papers on the subject and represented shorts in many international film festivals.
Joanna Miles, Vice-Chair
Joanna is currently Vice-President of Marketing for eOne Films, Canada’s leading motion picture distributor. Working on such titles as The Hunger Games, Divergent, Mommy and John Wick, she has effectively marketed these titles to English Canadian audiences. Joanna gained extensive marketing & distribution experience from her tenures at Maple Pictures and Capri Films, and received her start in the film industry at Alliance Films, where she was project manager on the two Toronto exhibits for The Lord Of The Rings film trilogy. Joanna is delighted to be part of the Toronto Reel Asian Film Festival board.
Geoffrey Peers, Treasurer
Geoff is a Chartered Professional Accountant who has spent most of his career working in the Financial Services Industry. For the past 12 years, he has worked at Scotiabank in Toronto and New York City and is currently a Vice President in the Internal Audit Department, responsible for audits of the Bank’s global corporate and commercial loan portfolios. Before working at the Bank, Geoff worked with KPMG in Toronto and PricewaterhouseCoopers in New York City, focusing on clients in the banking, brokerage and mutual fund industries. Geoff has been a member of the board of the Toronto Reel Asian International Film Festival, in the capacity as Treasurer, since September 2014.
Evelyn Siu, Secretary
Evelyn Siu is the Research Project Coordinator at the Global Diversity Exchange, a think and do tank on diversity, migration and inclusion at Ryerson University. While at the Maytree Foundation, she produced international events in the US and Europe, including the inaugural Cities of Migration International Conference in The Hague and in Berlin. Evelyn was the Artistic Associate for Harbourfront Centre’s celebrated summer festival season, and led several community partnerships with arts organizations, consulates, and culturally diverse artists in Toronto. Her experience in youth engagement included managing the youth literary mentorship program at Diaspora Dialogues and co-writing Harbourfront Centre’s youth strategy. She was an advisory member to the Cultural Pluralism in the Arts program at the University of Toronto Scarborough campus. She holds an honours BA degree with a specialist designation in Arts Management and a major in Art History from the University of Toronto. She joined Reel Asian as the co-chair of the festival’s Marketing Committee in 2010.
Richard is a partner at Fasken Martineau DuMoulin LLP, a leading full-service international law firm and proud sponsor of the Reel Asian Film Festival. He is a lawyer, patent agent and trademark agent practising in all areas of intellectual property law with a focus on patents. He advises companies of all sizes, from multinational to start-ups, on the creation, registration and enforcement of intellectual property rights. Richard also routinely counsels clients on issues relevant to the pharmacy industry, as well as regulatory matters involving drugs and medical devices in Canada.
Before becoming a lawyer, Richard worked as a community pharmacist and obtained a Ph.D. in Pharmaceutical Sciences from the University of Toronto. Richard has served as a member of the board of the Toronto Reel Asian International Film Festival since December 2014.
Immanuel is a bilingual criminal lawyer for Legal Aid Ontario. He currently works at various courthouses and locations around the city, providing support to the duty counsel program. Before moving to the public sector, Immanuel worked at a union-side labour and employment firm in downtown Toronto. He is a founding member of the Federation of Asian Canadian Lawyers, and served on their board of directors for five years. He joined the Board of Reel Asian in order to continue to support the arts and diversity. In his spare time, Immanuel plays as much tennis as he can. He is a fan of Fifth Generation Chinese Cinema.
For the past 10 years, Karthiga has played a pivotal role in the Canadian film industry, where she has worked for some of leading companies in the field. She grew from her contracts administration background at Alliance Atlantis to leading the digital and transactional team at Entertainment One. During her tenure, she developed and managed key agreements for all available platforms in Canada.
Karthiga joined Tricon Films in 2013 and has since risen to Vice President of Worldwide Sales & Acquisitions. In addition to leading the distribution team, Karthiga is on the board of the Reel Asian Film Festival, which showcases contemporary Asian media artists and fuels the appreciation of Asian cinema in Canada.
Bob is an Investment Banker with Laurentian Bank Securities. He provides capital markets, mergers and acquisitions (M&A) advisory services to public and private corporations across North America. Prior to joining Laurentian Bank Securities, Bob worked in a variety of sectors ranging from consulting to private equity. He is a graduate of University of Toronto’s Joseph L. Rotman School of Management’s Master of Business Administration (MBA) program and holds an undergraduate degree from McMaster University.
Bob is a movie buff, fan of the orchestra, supporter of the arts, culinary aficionado and sports enthusiast. Some of his favourite film directors / producers / screenwriters include: David Fincher, Tim Burton, Guillermo del Toro, Ang Lee and Hwang Dong-Hyuk.
Dave is a Regional Vice President at National Bank of Canada, managing Personal Banking and Wealth Management for the GTA Central and East region. He has over 20 years experience in the financial services industry. National Bank has been a proud sponsor of the Reel Asian Film Festival for four consecutive years. Dave has had an active role in this partnership and is committed to supporting the growth of a strong and vibrant Asian community here in the GTA.
Dave joined as a Member of the Reel Asian Film Festival Board in January 2014, and is honoured to represent the continuation of National Bank’s long-standing commitment to developing the cultural and economic development of their surrounding communities.
Dave is also a board member for the Altamira Foundation and has been a member of the Toronto Cabinet for Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation since 2008. In addition, Dave is on the Advisory Council with the School of Accounting and Finance at the Ted Rogers School of Management at Ryerson University since 2014. Dave holds an under graduate business degree from Ryerson University and a MBA from Dalhousie University.
