“You lack cool. And you have that ‘poor me’ look on your face.” When down-on-her-luck Shoko comes to Bali and encounters “Big Brother” Aniki, she thought he was an expatriate Japanesegangster. In reality, he’s a middle school dropout who immigrated to Bali and worked to become a wealthy property magnate. His eccentric life philosophy and philanthropic projects have made him popular among the locals.
But to Shoko, Aniki is just a blustering fool, even though it is Aniki who calls out the flaws of the Japanese and what’s really holding them back from success and happiness. Aniki has also been able to bring Japanese culture together with the warm, joyous nature and appreciative attitude of Indonesia.
Adapted from Sho Kuroiwa’s best seller If You Work Abroad You Can Become a Tycoon, Bali Big Brother is a charming comedy with an all-star cast that transports the audience to the tropical paradise of Bali, while reminding everyone that wealth requires responsibility and happiness is simply a state of mind. -KE
