Canadian Animators Down Under

Melbourne International Animation FestivalIt’s wintertime in Australia, and the Melbourne International Animation Festival is on now through the end of June.  Canadian animation is held in high regard around the world thanks to the strong efforts of the National Film Board, but it’s the Canadian animation community that makes it strong.  MIAF is holding a major exhibition of Canadian work with three showcase presentations, workshops, and artist talks.  BC-based animator and educator Jeff Chiba Stearns (two-time winner of our Animasian Award) is down under for the festival, but he’s not the only Reel Asian alum with work in selection…

Coming off a local win for Best Korean-Canadian Short at the Toronto Korean Film Festival, Jeff Tran & Louis Yeum‘s Traces of Joy (RA2012) is part of Canadian Indie Showcase #1 (Mon June 24 @ 8:15pm), along with two films by Madi Piller, president of the Toronto Animated Image Society.  Piller helped facilitate our youth animation workshops during our 2012 festival and has been a longtime RA supporter.

Stearns’ own Yellow Sticky Notes – Canadian Anijam shows up in Canadian Indie Showcase #2 (Tue June 25 @ 8:15pm). We copresented this at HotDocs in the spring and the original won our Animasian award for Stearns at our 2009 festival. The Canadian Anijam version showcases 15 celebrated Canadian animators including RA alums like Lillian Chan, Jonathan Ng, and Howie Shia. Also in this programme is Running (Heart, Mind, Body, Spirit) from Ann Marie Fleming. We screened this in 2008, and it was Fleming who generously founded the Animasian award at Reel Asian.

Fleming’s 2011 piece Gluttony (Family Visit) is part of Canadian Indie Showcase #3 (Sat June 29 @ 8:00pm), where it shares the screen with Leslie Supnet‘s Gains & Losses, which we screened last year. Supnet was most recently featured during our Asian Heritage Month School Tour (and has work showing this evening at Microscope Gallery, if you happen to be in Brooklyn NY!)

Congratulations to all the animators in selection at MIAF!
