An earlier documentary short, Fortune Cooking, that Jason Karman completed in 2009 is competing with 2 other films on a PBS television station in New York. Fortune Cooking is about the owner of the greatest Chinese restaurant outside of China. Filmed over a year, the owner was able to show his skills as an artist, but high expectations and low prices made for an unfortunate combination. The film has been profiled on The Early Edition on CBC Radio One, and at numerous Asian film festivals including San Diego, Philadelphia, Vancouver and Washington, DC.
A special 5 minute version has been made for this competition. If you are curious, please feel free to check out and vote online. Voting closes at 5 pm (Eastern Time) on September 28. The film with the most votes will be aired on WNET Public Television in New York next Saturday October 1, 2011.
The complete film can be found on National Screen Institute Online Film Festival: www.nsi-canada.ca/fortune_cooking.aspx
Also, Tad Hozumi is one of the participating artists in this year’s Nuit Blanche. Get those coffee mugs and a pair of mittens out cuz it’ll likely be a cold night and have fun wandering the city!
