Asian selections for TIFF 2010

The 35th Annual Toronto International Film Festival announced its 15 Galas and 35 Special Presentations which includes four Asian films with North American Premieres!

The Housemaid
Dir. Im Sang-Soo, South Korea
A young woman gets hired as a maid of a wealthy household, has an affair with the husband, and then becomes pregnant with his child. Oh, did I mention his wife was already pregnant with twins? Sounds soap opera-ish but the trailer says otherwise. A remake of a 60s Korean classic, the erotic thriller The Housemaid comes to Toronto after competing for the Palme d’Or at the 2010 Cannes Film Festival.

I Saw the Devil
Dir. Kim Jee-Woon, South Korea
When a psychotic serial killer murders his fiancée, the secret agent will do anything for his revenge- even if it means turning into a monster himself. Director Kim Jee-Woon (The Good, the Bad, the Weird) comes back to TIFF with his new thriller starring Choi Min-Sik (Oldboy) and Lee Byung-hun (The Good, the Bad, the Weird). If you like Oldboy and Sympathy for Lady Vengeance, this is something to look forward to.

The Legend of Chen Zhen
Dir. Andrew Lau, Hong Kong
Chen Zhen is back! Seven years after his reported death, Chen Zhen comes back in disguise to bring justice once and for all! Known as Bruce Lee’s unforgettable role in the classic kung-fu film Fist of Fury, Donnie Yen (Ip Man) reprise the role of Chen Zhen while choreographing as the martial arts director.

Norwegian Wood
Dir. Anh Hung Tran, Japan
Set in 1960s Japan, Norwegian Wood follows the relationship of a stoic college student Toru and two very different women: Naoko, girlfriend of his late high school classmate who now resides in the sanitarium and Midori, a college classmate who is the complete opposite of Naoko. An adaptation of Haruki Murakami’s bestselling novel of the same name and score from Radiohead’s Jonny Greenwood (There Will Be Blood), Norwegian Wood is not your average love story.

Full schedule will be posted on August 24th, and I’m already counting the days!
