Over the last two weeks, we have been brainstorming our cookie entry for the Artist Run Centre’s Holiday Quickie Bake Off. I quickly learned, this is no ordinary (or friendly) cookie competition. Not only have we debated whether bacon has its place in the world of sweets, we have also debated the question of taste vs concept. Apparently in past years, claws have come out over this very subject. We finally decided to go with something cute, something clever, and something involving rice…in other words, something very Asian. Luckily, we had Yang our office volunteer (who also happens to bring us baked treats every Thurs) to whip us into shape and keep us in the game.
To make our cookies, we turned our back room into a sugar factory yesterday with whiffs of marshmallow and margarine trailing into the hallways. Using hawthorne berry jelly rolls, muscat and apple gummies, pastel sugus candies, dried sweet potato, dried mango, coconut flakes, neon food colouring, icing sugar, and red sprinkles, we pumped out several take-out trays of “sushi cookies”. You can check out our handy work here. After being judged by CFMDC who were last year’s winners, we were presented with 2nd place! Vtape won 1st place for their peppermint-chocolate cookie / video / projection entry which I will admit was both cute and clever. Not only does Vtape get bragging rights, they also get to judge the Bake Off next year. Damn, we are really good at being judgmental here at Reel Asian…maybe next year.
