Art Metropole is seeking an Executive Director with vision who will lead the organization in an exciting period of renewal. Art Metropole is an internationally renowned artist-run centre that promotes the appreciation and importance of conceptually based art. Submission Deadline: April 22, 2011.
Founded by General Idea in 1974, Art Metropole fosters a dynamic network of artist-initiated publishing in any media, especially those formats pre-disposed to sharing and circulation. Art Metropole specializes in the contextualization and dissemination of artist’s books, multiples, and related materials with an emphasis on innovative formats and emergent technologies.
The Executive Director will help shape and implement an expanded vision of Art Metropole’s role as a prominent advocate and distributor of concept driven artistic activity, in collaboration with a committed, active Board of Directors and an experienced staff. The Executive Director will be capable of executing quality artistic programming that builds upon Art Metropole’s historical legacy while re-envisioning it in the context of the digital age.
The Executive Director will actively research and execute fundraising initiatives and be able to create and maintain strong relationships with private and public partners. As the leader of a team of four staff, the Executive Director will have exceptional governance and administrative skills indispensable to overseeing the day-to-day operations of a public shop and exhibition space with a strong online presence. The Executive Director will engage in community outreach, sustaining the long-lasting, positive relationships Art Metropole has with artists, collectors, curators and the public.This challenging and exciting position promises an ambitious, hard-working individual the opportunity to engage with a sophisticated international art community and to make a significant contribution to contemporary art by leading Art Metropole into the future.
Essential skills for this position include
– Excellent management and organizational leadership skills
– Keen engagement with new and old forms of artist
-initiated publishing and distribution
– Demonstrated ability in grant writing and fundraising, including corporate sponsorship and donor relations
– Experience with strategic planning and policy development
– Practical knowledge of Internet and digital technologies
– Substantial experience with non-profit artist-run centres
– Retail management experience an asset
Permanent full-time, 32+ hours/week
Remuneration: $40,000
