The city is already in a buzz for the Toronto International Film Festival (Sept 4-14). We’re only a couple weeks away, but with all the latest film and guests announcements, it’s hard to not get swept up by the excitement. We’ve combed through the entire film programmes and selected our Asian picks.

I Am Here | China | Dir: Fan Lixin

Lixin Fan, director of the award-winning Last Train Home, takes a very different look at contemporary China with this documentary that follows the eager young hopefuls who audition for the country’s most famous televised singing competition.

The Kingdom of Dreams and Madness | Japan | Dir: Mami Sunada

This engrossing documentary takes us inside Studio Ghibli, the renowned Japanese animation studio that created such classics as Spirited AwayGrave of the FirefliesMy Neighbor Totoro and Princess Mononoke.

Monsoon | Canada | Dir: Sturla Gunnarsson

Sturla Gunnarsson (director of the Festival People’s Choice Award-winning documentary Force of Nature: The David Suzuki Movie) journeyed to India to create this stunningly shot meditation on the phenomenon that some call “the soul of India.”
