A study of the friendship between a Chinese woman and a fisherman who came to Italy from Yugoslavia many years ago, who live in a small city-island in the Veneto lagoon.

Shun Li works in a textile factory in the outskirts of Rome, in the hope of sponsoring her eight-year-old son who lives in China. Suddenly, she is transferred to Chioggia, a small city-island in the Veneto lagoon, to work as a bartender. Bepi, a Slavic fisherman, nicknamed "the Poet", has been a regular at her pub for years. The friendship growing between Shun Li and Bepi upsets both the Chinese and local communities as they both interfere with the relationship.
