If FOOD, INC. made you think about how food is made, then the sumptuously shot AGRARIAN UTOPIA will make you understand how third-world farmers grow the crops that eventually become the bread or rice that we eat everyday. The film follows the daily lives of two rural families who, due to crippling interest rates on bank loans, decide to pool together to farm rice on a single patch of land. Though the resulting crops are abundant, the low prices mean that they have little chance for survival. All the while, political rallies are forming across the country. But who actually stands up for people such as these simple laborers? Beautiful, quietly affecting, politically sensitive and possibly the most important and thought-provoking film this festival, AGRARIAN UTOPIA gives us food for thought. The director will also be attending, so come ask questions this Saturday!
