Asian picks at Canadian Film Fest

Today Bern from the Canadian Film Festival stopped by the office to tell us about this upcoming festival, but also because Reel Asian’s Henry Wong is helping out with their event volunteers this year. Although I say “Reel Asian’s” Henry, the truth is Henry is a familiar festival face that I’m sure most film fans recognize from Toronto Youth Shorts (which he founded), Planet in Focus and most recently also at the Canadian Screen Awards. Enough about Henry…the Canadian Film Festival celebrates filmmaking homegrown talent right here, right in our own backyard with a selection of 19 shorts and 6 features at the Royal from March 20-23 this year. Here are some of our Asian picks:

  • Zen (Director Arshad Khan) – Zen is a three year old boy with cerebral palsy whose parents put their entire lives on the line in order to get the much needed therapies that are not covered by the Canadian health care system.
  • Flood (Director Derek Branscombe, Cast Eun Kyung Cho, Him Yong Lee, Minseo Cho, Sofia Kim) – The surface impression of an ideal Korean family slowly unravels as director Branscombe’s jagged, non-linear narrative takes the viewer along a Korean mother’s disturbing descent into the darkest recesses of her soul.
  • Four Paws (Director David Eng, Faisal Lutchmedial) – Boy meets girl, boy loses girl, boy decides he didn’t want girl anyway.
