CFC’s Annual BBQ: Call for Volunteers

The Canadian Film Centre’s Annual BBQ will be on September 9, 2012 from 12:30PM-3:00PM at the CFC (2489 Bayview Ave).  In addition to celebrating the Independent Creative Spirit, the focus of this year’s event will be the CFC Building Fund Initiative.  CFC will be launching a new initiative, “Tweet the Future” to help generate funds that will go towards the completion of the CFC Actors Conservatory Building.

Every year, this groundbreaking event is a guaranteed success because of the time, talent and dedication of volunteers like you.

Volunteer Requirements:

1. Be 19 years of age or over (unless assisting with set up only, please indicate if you are under 19)

2. RSVP and attend one of two mandatory volunteer orientation sessions. (Please see below for details)

  • NOTE: Both Returning Volunteers and New Volunteers are required to attend an orientation session.

**If you are unable to attend an orientation session, you will not be able to participate in the BBQ**

  • Please respond by August 22, 2012

3. Return email with an updated resume attached and answers to the following questions (short answers please)

a. What events have you volunteered for in the past, and what did you find most fulfilling?  (NOTE: You can choose to include other CFC events in your answer)

b. What are your top two volunteer preferences?

  • Please review job descriptions below and please be aware that your choices are subject to change


Volunteer Orientation Session Details:

Orientation Sessions take place at the CFC Grounds (2489 Bayview Ave., just South of York Mills Rd.) and a light meal will be provided.  Please select one date to attend:

NOTE: The following dates are subject to change.  You will be informed if any change is necessary.

  • Date 1: Tuesday August 28, 2012
    Time: 6:00PM – 7:30PM
  • Date 2: Thursday August 30, 2012
    Time: 6:00PM – 7:30PM

Volunteer Job Descriptions

Volunteer positions are assigned based on volunteer experience and answers to the questions above.  CFC sincerely hope to find the best volunteer position for you.  Please carefully review the job descriptions and contact the volunteer coordinator if you need any further clarification to help you choose your preferences!

1. Setup Crew

  • Setup assistance is requested for either Saturday September 8, Sunday September 9 or both
  • Must be comfortable carrying moderate to heavy items.
  • Great if you are a student under 19 years of age and/or like lots of activity!

2.  Tweet the Future/ Building Fund Campaign Ambassadors

  • Fundraising experience is an asset as you will be encouraging guests to contribute to the CFC Building Fund
  • Very computer savvy, comfortable with Twitter (can explain how to set up an account/tweet)
  • Excited, out-going and confident personality
  • Some origami folding may be required
  • Must be comfortable standing and walking for long periods of time

3. Greeter

  • Direct guests to parking area and the sign-in table.
  • Requires a vocal, confident and out-going personality
  • Must be comfortable standing and walking for long periods of time

4. Sign-In: Check-In

  • Check guests in at the sign-in table.
  • Must be computer savvy, outgoing and able to problem solve.
  • Reception experience is preferred

5. Sign-In: Wristband

  • Work along with sign-in volunteers checking guest ID’s
  • Apply wristbands to guests as they are checked in at the sign in table
  • Must be comfortable standing for long periods of time


6. Food Handlers

  • Food service experience is preferred
  • Assist at food stations as required
  • Must be comfortable standing and walking for long periods of time


7. Green Ambassadors/Floaters

  • Bussing food stations and ensuring general tidiness of the CFC BBQ grounds
    • NOTE: you will not be handing garbage bag removal
  • Ensure no unauthorized entry through major access points
  • Offering breaks to other volunteers
  • Must be flexible with spontaneous tasks
  • Must be comfortable standing or walking for long periods of time


8. Raffle Sales

  • With a partner, engage guests to buy raffle tickets.
  • Requires a vocal, confident and out-going personality.
  • Fundraising or sales experience is an asset
  • Experience with Moneris is an asset or ability to learn electronic payment equipment.
  • Must be comfortable standing and walking for long periods of time


9.  Raffle Claim Team

  • Work alongside the finance team to distribute raffle bags to guests
  • Must be comfortable standing or walking for long periods of time



  • RSVP to 1 orientation session
  • Answer the 2 questions
  • Send an updated resume/ volunteer experience overview
  • Send volunteer preferences by Wednesday August 22, 2012
