Planet in Focus is Canada’s largest environmental film festival and this year their annual event returns on November 21-24, 2013 with filmmaker and activist Zacharias Kunuk and Chris Hadfield as the recipients of their Eco-Heroes Award. Here are our picks of the fest:
- THE MOSUO SISTERS (Dir. Marlo Poras, USA): A gripping story of two sisters, two Chinas, and the struggle tokeep both a traditional culture and an intimate familial relationship alive.
- ELEMENTAL (Dir. Emmanual Vaughan-Lee, USA): Eriel Deranger confronts the developers of the Tar Sands project in Canada, Jay Harman searches for financiers of his revolutionary device that fights globalwarming in Australia; Rajendra Singh tries to shut down factories poluting the Ganges. All three are about to lose their homes.
- HAVE YOU SEEN ARANA? (Dir. Sunanda Bhat, India): This beautiful doc gives voice to the residents of a culturally rich and bio-diverse region in South India where industrial development is causing a drastic and dangerous transformation.
- TOKYO WAKA (Dirs. John Haptas and Kristine Samuelson, USA): A visually stunning doc that ponders the relationship between ultra-urbanTokyo, its human inhabitants and its 20,000-strong crow population.
