Last night, Chris, Joyce and I ignored the hype about the “storm of the year” that was supposedly hitting Toronto and attended the advance screening of WHAT WOMEN WANT at the Kennedy Commons AMC Theatre. If you haven’t heard press about this film and are wondering whether it has anything to do with the film of the same name starring Mel Gibson…you are correct. This is the Chinese remake where Mel Gibson has been replaced by Andy Lau (amazing) and Helen Hunt has been replaced by Gong Li (maybe not so amazing).
What I liked about the film: Andy Lau’s signature dance moves, the added magical Disney quality, the hilarious blooper reel and the sheer entertainment value of this rom com. What I didn’t like about the film: Gong Li’s sometimes awkward comedic skills, that it is almost 2 hours (1.5 hrs would’ve been sufficient) and the lack of deeper connection between the two main characters (probably as a result of GL’s sometimes awkward comedic skills). That being said, it was incredible to be able to watch this feature on the big screen – not to mention, we officially got to watch this film first, even before Hong Kong and even before China (who will release this film on Chinese New Year’s Day). China Lion Entertainment, the distributor for WWW, was also responsible for the release of IF YOU ARE THE ONE 2 last Christmas. That holiday release was the first time in history that a Chinese film had a simultaneous release in North America. WWW is the second time this has ever happened.
So be a part of a historical moment and let Andy Lau tell you what you want.
WHAT WOMEN WANT is officially released tomorrow February 3, 2011 at participating AMC Theatres.
