Soo Ryu– Motion, Transformation and Growth

Last week, Sonia and I had the opportunity to attend ‘Soo Ryu – Motion, Transformation and Growth’ event held by Mi Young Kim of the Korean Dance Studies Society of Canada. Celebrating the first full moon of the lunar new year, Kim gathered artists in the G.T.A to meet and share information while eating yummy Korean food at the Korean Canadian Cultural Association (KCCA). It was our first time visiting KCCA so we were in luck when we again met Micah Adler, Executive Director of KCCA, for a quick tour.

After one look at the food setup, Sonia and I called home to tell them go ahead and eat without us :)

Now back to the event:

Kim mentioned that this was the first time for artists from various areas to gather in one place.

The most memorable moment for me was when an artist held back his tears as he talked about the difficulty of trying to establish himself as an artist in a new country. Mi Young Kim acknowledged that in our challenging immigrant society, artists are the true keepers and diplomats of Korean culture and they need all the support they can get. It was interesting how Kim invited Soraya Peerbaye, a Grants Officer from the Toronto Arts Council (TAC), to talk and answer questions about how the TAC can support artists in such difficult moments.
