Mirai is Mamoru Hosoda’s heartwarming look at the difficulties of becoming the older sibling, as seen through the eyes of young Kun. When his parents arrive home with his baby sister, Mirai, Kun is less than thrilled. As the new addition becomes the center of his parents’ attention, Kun becomes increasingly jealous. He withdraws into himself and takes refuge in the backyard, where a magical family tree grows.
As he spends more time by the tree, Kun finds himself suddenly catapulted into a fantasy world where the past and present mingle. Guided by his relatives at different ages of their own lives, Kun finally manages to carve out his own story as the older sibling. -KE
