In the early 1980s, Shatin, part of Hong Kong’s New Territories, was constructed to ease overpopulation. Compared to its big city neighbours, resources in the region were scarce. To lift his students’ spirits, middle-school principal Mr. Lo assembles a baseball team of underachievers, hoping that teamwork and discipline can turn the teens’ lives around. At the heart of this newly formed team are the pitcher-catcher duo, Tse Chi-lung and Fan Chun-wai, childhood friends with opposite personalities. After a rocky start to the season, the underdog team starts to rise up the ranks, just as the friends’ personal issues begin to seep onto the field.
Inspired by the true story of Hong Kong’s first youth league baseball team, Weeds On Fire is a touching tale of scrappy kids who find glory and meaning in the ballpark, as they eventually make it all the way to the championship and face the undefeated champions from Japan.
Due to technical requirements, WEEDS ON FIRE will now be screening at Innis Town Hall in Downtown Toronto on Saturday November 19th at 2:45pm. WEEDS ON FIRE will not be screening in Richmond Hill.
