Sign up free for Industry Bootcamp and meet professionals from various fields, companies and organizations through panels, seminars or one-on-one consultations!
Participants will pre-submit questions and project information, hosting a mix of filmmakers from various stages of career. Each virtual session will be held on Zoom.
Below are this year’s Industry Bootcamp sessions and the organizations involved:
Session #1: Canadian Media Producers Association (CMPA)
Date and Time: Saturday, October 23 from 1pm – 1:45pm
Session Panelists & Bios: Lisa Moreau, Member Services & Special Events and Marcia Douglas, Senior Director, Business Affairs
Lisa is responsible for all functions related to member service, and is one of the primary organizers of the CMPA’s annual Prime Time conference. As the point person for both new and renewing members, Lisa enjoys the opportunity to deal individually with every company that joins the CMPA. She handles the day-to-day operations of the membership department, and also manages the membership database. Lisa handles all logistics related to the CMPA’s annual Prime Time conference, a national networking event for some 600 of Canada’s most prominent business leaders from the feature film, television, interactive media, broadcasting and telecommunications industries. Prior to joining the CMPA in 1998, Lisa held positions in finance/accounting, human resources, office management, event planning and client relations. Before she joined the CMPA’s membership department, Lisa was the association’s Director of Finance.
Marcia Douglas brings extensive experience in—and strategic insight into—the Canadian media landscape for traditional and digital platforms. With a background in business affairs and production, Marcia works to establish policies and opportunities for producer interests in their business dealings. She directly works on files related to the kids and family sector, Terms of Trade, CMF, and Ontario regional issues, she also supports the CMPA’s equity, diversity and inclusion efforts and is the industry co-chair of the Ontario Green Screen Initiative.
During the 30 minute session, Lisa and Marcia will provide an overview of the role the CMPA plays in the Canadian production industry, outline the benefits of CMPA membership, and answer questions.
About the CMPA:
The Canadian Media Producers Association is the national advocacy organization for independent producers, representing hundreds of companies engaged in the development, production, and distribution of English-language content made for television, cinema, and digital media channels. We work to promote the continued success of the Canadian production sector and to ensure a bright future for the diverse content made by our members for both domestic and international audiences.
Session #2: Behind the Scenes Services Inc. (BTS) and Lewis-Birnberg Hanet LLP (LBS)
Date and Time: Saturday, October 23 from 3pm – 3:45pm
Session Panelists: Eric Birnberg and Karla Bobadilla
Are you developing your first feature live action or documentary film, first web series, or first TV pilot? Are you looking to apply for funding or pitching to funders for your next project? If you are, this is a good time to think about your plans and level up your producing chops.
Join this session with reps from business affairs and administration firm Behind the Scenes Services Inc. (BTS) and entertainment law firm Lewis Birnberg Hanet, LLP (LBH) to ask questions about how to set up the business and legal infrastructure to enable producing success, and make your pitch/application stand out to funders.
This session is meant for filmmakers/producers who have completed short films/projects in the past, and are now scaling up to larger productions and budgets. Get ahead of the curve and avoid the typical pitfalls that impact the assessment of your funding proposals.
When registering, we ask that you submit a brief description of the project you’re working on and a few questions so that we can tailor this high-level discussion towards noted areas of interest.
The session will begin with a moderated discussion with these experienced reps from BTS and LBH, followed by a Q&A session based on submitted questions.

Session #4: Charles Street Video

An overview of the services, support and equipment offered to filmmakers and media artists at Charles Street Video.
About Charles Street Video:
Charles Street Video (CSV) is a non-profit production organization established in 1981 to help support media artists. We provide affordable access to equipment and post-production editing facilities for creating videos, films, installations and other media art forms. We offer regular workshops, training sessions and residencies.
CSV also commissions artists to create new works, and sponsors a variety of youth-oriented production programs and post-secondary scholarships. We actively participate in local exhibitions of media art through our partnerships with arts organizations and grassroots festivals.
Charles Street Video fosters the creation of media art, encourages experimentation, and develops an artistic community and is Toronto’s leading media arts production centre where emerging and established artists gather and achieve their artistic vision.
CSV is supported by its members, the Canada Council for the Arts, the Ontario Arts Council and the City of Toronto through the Toronto Arts Council for operating funding and by the Government of Canada through the Department of Canadian Heritage, the Ontario Trillium Foundation and the Canada Council for the Arts for capital funding.
Session #5: Media training with Judy Lung

Judy Lung is a communications expert and innovator, committed to building a more inclusive and equitable screen industry. With 20+ years of experience creating PR, marketing, and social media campaigns for Canada’s leading arts & entertainment organizations, Lung is known for developing data-driven audience-building strategies and championing Canadian content and talent, both at home and on the international stage. Currently, Lung is VP, Communications & Marketing at Touchwood PR. Lung sits on the boards of Unsinkable, a not-for-profit founded by Olympian Silken Laumann dedicated to amplifying diverse voices to drive change in the way people manage their well-being, and BIPOC TV & FILM, an advocacy group committed to increasing representation of Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour in front of and behind the camera. In 2020, Lung spearheaded HireBIPOC, an initiative created by BIPOC TV & FILM with Bell Media to transform hiring practices and increase opportunities for BIPOC creatives and crew in the Canadian media industry.
Session description: 30 minute media training workshop + Q&A
This session is intended to help underrepresented artists effectively and strategically navigate and leverage media interviews and other related PR opportunities.This tailored media training session will provide practical tools and tips for filmmakers and media artists to position and communicate their projects. This session is intended for both emerging and seasoned filmmakers and media artists, with the intention of providing strategies to use at all stages of your career. In the 30 minute media training workshop, you will learn what to expect in media interviews, how to prepare for them and how to deliver and frame your own messaging. This workshop will also be useful for emerging artists who are pitching projects to broadcasters, funders, and partners and are looking to learn best practices in creating impactful messaging.

Whether you identify as up and coming or well-established in the industry, talking to unions or legal services can be daunting. We know that building a solid network and community as a filmmaker is crucial to your success, and that’s something Reel Asian always wants to provide to everyone we work with.
How to book a 1-on-1: All registrants will receive an invite from Reel Asian at the end of Bootcamp with a calendar of available time slots from November – December. Select the time slot(s) in one or all of the helpful industry professionals’ calendars, and you will be emailed a calendar invite with a meeting link to join, and a reminder email one day before. Prioritization will be given to Asian-identifying participants for the limited 1-on-1 sessions.

An incubator for arts organizations engaged in the presentation of arts and cultural works. Through a network and collaboration-based approach, a network of arts organizations will be working together, learning from each other and supporting each other as they explore the impact of digital technologies on the presentation of artistic and cultural productions.
