Reel Asian presents Suman Ladies at The Bridging Festival

 2012 Unsung Voices participant Althea Balmes screens her award-winning short documentary at The Bridging Festival.

The Bridging Festival is an arts and culture festival aimed to bring together the vibrant neighborhoods of Scarborough, taking place on August 15, 20, 23 and 24, 2013. On August 20, The Bridging Festival will be hosting a Festival Film Night and Reel Asian is proud to announce that one of the films included in the programming is Suman Ladies by filmmaker Althea Balmes. The short film documentary Suman Ladies was created as part of Reel Asian’s Unsung Voices Summer Youth Video Prduction Workshop in 2012.

THE BRIDGING FESTIVAL – FESTIVAL FILM NIGHT

Synopsis: After contemplating returning to her homeland, a struggling woman executes a plan to solve her problems in the streets of Toronto by using suman, the delicious Filipino rice cake.

Althea Balmes is a York University graduate involved in the Filipino community and its social issues. She produces art in the form of stories and comic books. Last year Althea was part of the inaugural Unsung Voices program (Reel Asian’s Summer Youth Video Production Workshop), where she created her short film documentary, Suman Ladies. Her film went on to win the 2012 WIFT-T Award at the 2012 Toronto Reel Asian International Film Festival.
