The Day Before is a photo series focused on the mundane moments leading up to Reel Asian’s 30th anniversary festival in November. By turning attention away from the celebration itself, the series captures the quiet moments of preparation, anticipation, and connection that often go unnoticed, celebrating the people and everyday experiences behind the occasion.
Through 10 different scenes, The Day Before features staff, volunteers, community, past festival creative artists, generations of Unsung Voices, board and advisory members past and present, and more.

Founded in Toronto in 1997, Reel Asian is Canada’s largest pan-Asian film festival and a year-round cultural organization dedicated to championing Asian, Asian diasporic, and Asian Canadian filmmakers and artists. What began as a grassroots film festival has grown into a national platform supporting filmmakers and audiences through screenings, education, industry initiatives, artist development, and community programming presented across Toronto, the GTA, and online across Canada.
