May is Asian Heritage Month in Canada! It is a time to reflect on and celebrate the contributions continuously made by Asian Canadians. Since 2008, Reel Asian has been working with schools across the GTA to bring filmmakers and youth together during this special month.
During Asian Heritage Month, Reel Asian provides in-school presentation programs, Career in the Arts, where selected Asian Canadian filmmakers will present their works, and also speak about a variety of social issues and filmmaking approaches such as documentary, drama, and animation. Every year, around 1,000 middle and high school students in the GTA participate in this free career presentation program. It is a free-of-charge program for students and the school!
In addition to showcasing the diversity of Asian and Asian Canadian culture, the youth program will introduce youth to film as vehicles for artistic expression, and social and cultural advocacy. The filmmaker will also engage students in a discussion and field questions. This is a unique opportunity for students to interact with filmmakers about their creative process and thematic interests, and to demonstrate that the film industry presents viable career opportunities for students.
