In-Theatre Screening FAQ

Tickets go on sale at 10:00 AM on Wednesday, October 19, 2022.

In-theatre screening tickets are available to purchase up until 20min after the scheduled start time of the show – either in-person at the venue box office, or from your mobile device while standing in the lobby! Same-day/rush availability is not guaranteed and we strongly encourage you to purchase your tickets in advance.

With the dissolution of the Ontario Film Review Board, it has become the responsibility of film presentation organizations to formulate and adhere to their own self-regulated guidelines for recommended audiences. Reel Asian uses the following ratings:

  • G – General Audiences Programmes are suitable for audiences of any age.
  • PG – Parental Guidance Programmes may contain themes or depictions where parental guidance is suggested for young audiences aged 12-17. This may include but is not limited to depictions of smoking, alcohol consumption, casual nudity, or implied sexual activity; or coarse language/swearing in dialogue.
  • AA – Adult Audiences Programme contains mature themes or depictions more suitable for 18+ audiences. This may include but is not limited to depictions of illicit drug use, explicit sexual activity, violence, self-harm, or trauma.

Reel Asian endeavours to include content advisories for all AA-rated programmes, and PG-rated programmes if they are warranted. For content we deem to be especially triggering, we will include a link to peer support resources. The rating and any advisories are listed in the programme guide, on the website, and on-screen before the programme begins.

If the film or programme detail page shows two ticket options, click on the IN-PERSON TICKETS button – if only one TICKETS button is available, it means the title is ONLY available as an in-theatre screening. A pop-up window powered by Elevent will appear. From there, you can pick a section – if you need wheelchair-accessible or step-free seating, choose the Accessible section. You can then select however many tickets you want (up to 10 for regular seating, up to 2 for accessible seating).

You are then prompted to pick your seats. Almost all screenings at the festival this year have assigned seating, reflecting a change in how festivals operate and audience preferences. No more rushing to arrive early to get the best available seats – you select where you want to sit when you buy your ticket!

The venue box office at each venue opens an hour before the first screening of the day at that venue and stays open until 30 minutes into the last screening of the day at that venue. Same-day/rush tickets for each screening are available from an hour before that screening’s scheduled start time to 20 minutes into that screening but ticketholders arriving after the screening has started are seated at the discretion of festival staff and subject to availability. Venue box offices only accept credit cards or cash for payment.

The venue box office at TIFF Bell Lightbox also serves as the festival box office, selling advance tickets to all ticketed festival screenings and live events taking place over the entire festival during the days and hours in which it is open. The festival box office only accepts credit cards or cash for payment.

Only at shows that are explicitly noted as having open seating. Seating for almost all festival shows is assigned. Seat changes will not be permitted and guests are required to sit in their reserved seat for the duration of the movie, and not sit in empty seats or rows.

You must be in your seat by the screening’s scheduled start time or we reserve the right to void and resell your ticket. Latecomers will be seated at the discretion of the festival and subject to available seating. You will not be refunded if we are unable to seat you due to your tardy arrival.

While we encourage guests to be vaccinated, there is no requirement to be and no proof of vaccination is required. All staff and festival volunteers in public-facing roles have provided proof of vaccination and will remain masked at all times. We will be actively offering KN95 masks to guests as they enter the theatres, but masking is not required at any festival venue.

These policies are subject to change in accordance with public health measures that may be enacted or in force at the time of the festival.

Your In-Theatre 4-Pack Package comes with four (4) vouchers for in-theatre screenings. Visit the film index and select the screenings you want to use your vouchers for, click Buy Tickets and login to Elevent using the email associated with your purchase (or the email at which you were invited to receive a complementary 4-Pack). Redeem your voucher(s) following the on-screen instructions. If you are redeeming in-person during the festival, please advise the Box Office agent that you want to redeem your 4-Pack.

We acknowledge that there may be economic barriers to access. We are offering Equity Access Tickets with a $2 discount off all ticket prices – and FREE tickets for in-person daytime screenings – to improve access to ticketing.  Equity Access Tickets are available for both in-theatre and digital screenings. We ask that you only claim one of these tickets if you identify as one of these communities:

  • Student
Currently enrolled in an educational institution, including post-secondary students and mature students; or a self-identified participant in an alternative school outside of the traditional school system
  • Senior
An individual aged 65 years or older, on a fixed income or retired
  • Arts Worker
Someone whose primary income is derived from the practice, creation, or curation of art in any discipline, including arts administrators
  • Un(der)waged
Anyone whose income is non-existent, inconsistent, or precarious; including gig workers and those working in the underground or unrecognized economies, or those whose labour is not recognized by a wage

To access these tickets, simply select from the 2022 Equity Access category of available tickets after choosing a showtime (and section, if choosing an in-theatre showtime). Equity Access Tickets are limited to two per showtime. You will be asked at check-out to select which equity access group you identify as – this information will be anonymized before being analyzed in aggregate.

No. Digital screenings are separately ticketed. If you have purchased a ticket to an in-theatre screening and end up missing the event for some reason, please contact boxoffice@reelasian.com and we may, at our discretion, provide you with a voucher to watch the digital screening if one is available; however refunds for your in-theatre presentation are not refundable.

No. In-theatre screenings are separately ticketed. You will have to purchase an in-theatre screening ticket to attend an in-theatre presentation.

In-theatre screenings will be presented with open captions with few exceptions – refer to individual film pages for accessibility notes.

We will be offering ASL interpretation and live-captioning for the intro and Q&A at five keystone events:

  • the Opening Night Gala at 7:00PM on Wednesday, November 9, 2022
  • the Live Pitch Finale at 3:00PM on Sunday, November 13, 2022
  • the Centrepiece Gala at 7:30PM on Sunday, November 13, 2022
  • the Reel Ideas Live Panel at 7:00PM on Saturday, November 19, 2022
  • the Festival Closing Night Gala at 7:00PM on Sunday, November 20, 2022

These efforts are part of an evolving programme to broaden accessibility and outreach to the d/Deaf and disabled communities, particularly those who also identify as part of an Asian community. We plan on expanding access at the festival year by year.

Yes! The festival is committed to using accessible screening venues. Please choose the Accessible section after selecting an in-person showtime. You will be prompted to select seats in the accessible areas of the theatre – spaces for wheelchairs are designated with the wheelchair symbol and all other seats are marked as stepfree.

As part of our accessibility programme, you will be asked if your seat selections are for a companion to someone using a wheelchair – you can choose to have companion seats refunded (refunds have to be processed after the screening takes place but you can request a refund when you select the seat). As part of our wraparound care, you will be asked at check-out for details about your incoming & outgoing paratrans arrangements so we can have a festival volunteer meet you at your drop-off point on your way in and escort you to your pick-up point on your way out.

We will also ask you for a contact number in case you do not show up when we are expecting you – your seats/spaces will be held no matter when you show up; we just want to have a way to check to see if you’re still coming! Finally, there is an opportunity to let us know if you have other accommodations you want us to know about to better serve your needs.

What does 'sold out' or 'rush' show or screening mean?

A show is ‘rush’ when all available tickets are sold out. Reel Asian will release any available assigned-seating tickets for sale 15min before the show’s scheduled start time, and then again 5min before the show’s scheduled start time.

Please arrive early to stand in the designated rush line in order to gain admission based on availability inside the venue. Due to some screenings being in popular demand, there will be no guarantee of entry. Please sit where directed. Rush seating is at the discretion of the festival and not guaranteed.

Ticket-holders are required to be in their seats by the show’s scheduled start time or we reserve the right to void and resell their ticket in the event of rush. During the intro, we will look for empty seats and sell two-part rush tickets to the rush line.

Digital Screenings FAQ

Tickets go on sale at 10:00 AM on Wednesday, October 19, 2022.

Digital film screening tickets are available to purchase up until 10:00 PM on Sunday, November 20, 2022 – ticket sales for digital film screenings stop 2hrs before the festival ends.

If the film or programme detail page shows two ticket options, click on the ONLINE SCREENING TICKETS button – if only one TICKETS button is available, it means the title is NOT available as a digital screening. A pop-up window powered by Elevent will appear.  You can then select up to one digital screening ticket.

Not all features are available for digital presentation. All shorts are available digitally but only through a Shorts VOD Pass – just $20! – where you can watch shorts either in-programme or individually. Buy now!

Films become available to watch across Canada from 10:00AM November 14 to 11:59PM November 20, except where explicitly noted otherwise. Once you click play, you have a 48-hour watch window to complete your viewing. Ticket sales will end at 10:00PM on Sunday, November 20. This will ensure that the last purchase-able tickets will have a 2 hour window to start their screening. Please note that if your screening goes past 11:59PM on November 20, you will still be able to complete the viewing as long as you don’t exit the player window or disconnect from the browser session.

You will receive a Virtual Access email around 9:00AM on Monday, November 14, 2022. Click the link in your Virtual Access email and you will be taken to our CineSend portal. Or, you can go to watch.reelasian.com and enter the 9-digit access code that is included in the Virtual Access email.

The live Q&A experience is reserved for attendees of the in-theatre presentation. We will be offering pre-recorded digital filmmaker interactions that provide an analogous, but different experience. These interactions will offer more in-depth and nuanced conversations that the time constraints of a live post-screening Q&A cannot provide.

Go to watch.reelasian.com and enter the same log-in credentials associated with your Elevent purchase under Member Login. You will see all the available festival selections and can watch them in unlimited video-on-demand.

Go to watch.reelasian.com and enter the same log-in credentials associated with your Elevent purchase under Member Login. You will see all shorts films in the festival selections and can watch them in unlimited video-on-demand.

Short films are grouped together in programming streams based on theme and subject matter and designed to be viewed in-programme; however you can also watch shorts individually.

You will receive an email confirmation from Elevent, as well as a Virtual Access email around 9:00AM on Monday, November 14, 2022. Films will be available starting 10:00AM on Monday, November 14, 2022. If you buy tickets after this, you can click the watch link in the email received after purchase to be taken immediately to our CineSend portal where you will be able to watch the film.

In general, you have 48hrs to complete your film watching after you click the link; however if you click the link within the last 48hrs of festival film availability (i.e. after 11:59PM on Friday, November 18, 2022), you will have less than 48hrs to start watching the film.

As long as you start watching the film while it’s still available, you won’t be cut off even if your watch time goes past 11:59PM on November 20, 2022. HOWEVER, if you pause the film (or have to disconnect from the server) after it becomes unavailable, you will NOT be able to restart.
