In-Theatre Screening FAQ

Tickets go on sale at 10:00 AM on Wednesday, October 19, 2022.

In-theatre screening tickets are available to purchase up until 20min after the scheduled start time of the show – either in-person at the venue box office, or from your mobile device while standing in the lobby! Same-day/rush availability is not guaranteed and we strongly encourage you to purchase your tickets in advance.

With the dissolution of the Ontario Film Review Board, it has become the responsibility of film presentation organizations to formulate and adhere to their own self-regulated guidelines for recommended audiences. Reel Asian uses the following ratings:

  • GA – General Audiences Programmes are suitable for audiences of any age.
  • PG – Parental Guidance Programmes may contain themes or depictions where parental guidance is suggested for young audiences aged 12-17. This may include but is not limited to depictions of smoking, alcohol consumption, casual nudity, or implied sexual activity; or coarse language/swearing in dialogue.
  • AA – Adult Audiences Programme contains mature themes or depictions more suitable for 18+ audiences. This may include but is not limited to depictions of illicit drug use, explicit sexual activity, violence, self-harm, or trauma.

Reel Asian endeavours to include content advisories for all AA-rated programmes, and PG-rated programmes if they are warranted. For content we deem to be especially triggering, we will include a link to peer support resources. The rating and any advisories are listed in the programme guide, on the website, and on-screen before the programme begins.

From the film or programme detail pages, click on the PUBLIC TICKETS button. Public ticketing begins at 10AM on Saturday, October 21, 2023. A pop-up window powered by Elevent will appear – you may have to log in to your Elevent account; if you do not have one you can sign up for free at www.goelevent.com.

If the show has assigned seating, you can pick a section and select your seat. Almost all screenings at the festival this year have assigned seating, reflecting a change in how festivals operate and audience preferences. No more rushing to arrive early to get the best available seats – you select where you want to sit when you buy your ticket! If the show has open seating, you will just receive an admission ticket.

For wheelchair-accessible or step-free seating, click the BOOK ACCESSIBLE TICKETS button. You will be redirected to an Accesibility Intake Form and someone from the festival will follow up with you personally by email to make the arrangements for your visit.

The venue box office at each venue opens an hour before the first screening of the day at that venue and stays open until 30 minutes into the last screening of the day at that venue. Same-day/rush tickets for each screening are available from an hour before that screening’s scheduled start time to 20 minutes into that screening but ticketholders arriving after the screening has started are seated at the discretion of festival staff and subject to availability. Venue box offices only accept credit cards or cash for payment.

The venue box office at TIFF Bell Lightbox also serves as the festival box office, selling advance tickets to all ticketed festival screenings and live events taking place over the entire festival during the days and hours in which it is open. The festival box office only accepts credit cards or cash for payment.

Only at shows that are explicitly noted as having open seating. Seating for almost all festival shows is assigned. Seat changes will not be permitted and guests are required to sit in their reserved seat for the duration of the movie, and not sit in empty seats or rows.

You must be in your seat by the screening’s scheduled start time or we reserve the right to void and resell your ticket. Latecomers will be seated at the discretion of the festival and subject to available seating. You will not be refunded if we are unable to seat you due to your tardy arrival.

While we encourage guests to be vaccinated, there is no requirement to be and no proof of vaccination is required. KN95 masks are available at the public box office and at guest services, but masking is not required at any festival venue.

These policies are subject to change in accordance with public health measures that may be enacted or in force at the time of the festival.

We acknowledge that there may be economic barriers to access. We are offering Equity Access Tickets with a $2 discount off all regula-priced tickets – and $5 off of gala tickets – to improve access to ticketing. We ask that you only claim one of these tickets if you identify as one of these communities:

  • Student
Currently enrolled in an educational institution, including post-secondary students and mature students; or a self-identified participant in an alternative school outside of the traditional school system
  • Senior
An individual aged 65 years or older, on a fixed income or retired
  • Arts Worker

  • Un(der)waged
Anyone whose income is non-existent, inconsistent, or precarious; including gig workers and those working in the underground or unrecognized economies, or those whose labour is not recognized by a wage

To access these tickets, simply select from the EQ category of available tickets after choosing a showtime and section. Equity Access Tickets are limited to two per showtime. You will be asked at check-out to select which equity access group you identify as – this information will be anonymized before being analyzed in aggregate.

In-theatre screenings will be presented with open captions with few exceptions – refer to individual film pages for accessibility notes.

Yes! The festival is committed to using accessible screening venues. Please click the BOOK ACCESSIBLE TICKETS button after selecting an in-person showtime. You will be directed to our Accessibility Intake Form where you can provide details about your accessibility needs and the number of tickets you are requesting. A box office representative will contact you directly by email to confirm your arrangements.

As part of our accessibility programme, you will be asked if your seat selections are for a companion to someone using a wheelchair – you can choose to have companion seats waived. As part of our wraparound care, you have the option to provide details about your incoming & outgoing paratrans arrangements or if you would like to have a festival volunteer meet you at your drop-off point on your way in and escort you to your pick-up point on your way out.

We will also ask you for a contact number in case you do not show up when we are expecting you – your seats/spaces will be held no matter when you show up; we just want to have a way to check to see if you’re still coming! Finally, there is an opportunity to let us know if you have other accommodations you want us to know about to better serve your needs.

What does 'sold out' or 'rush' show or screening mean?

A show is ‘rush’ when all available tickets are sold out. Reel Asian will release any available assigned-seating tickets for sale 15min before the show’s scheduled start time, and then again 5min before the show’s scheduled start time.

Please arrive early to stand in the designated rush line in order to gain admission based on availability inside the venue. Unless there is great demand for a particular screening, we can almost always accommodate everyone who comes to rush for a ticket! If you arrive late to a rush line, however, we cannot guarantee seats will be available. Please sit where directed. Rush seating is at the discretion of the festival and not guaranteed.

Ticket-holders are required to be in their seats by the show’s scheduled start time or we reserve the right to void and resell their ticket in the event of rush. During the intro, we will look for empty seats and sell two-part rush tickets to the rush line.

We will be offering ASL interpretation for the intro and Q&A at three keystone events:

  • the Opening Night Gala at 7:30PM on Wednesday, November 8, 2023
  • the Centrepiece Gala at 7:30PM on Sunday, November 12, 2023
  • the Reel Ideas Live Panel at 7:00PM on Thursday, November 16, 2023

We will be offering live-captioning at the following two events:

  • the Reel Ideas online session at 4:30PM on Wednesday, November 15, 2023
  • the Reel Ideas Live Panel at 7:00PM on Thursday, November 16, 2023

In addition, almost all of our in-theatre presentation work will have either English subtitles, or open captions. Each film’s accessibility  details are listed on their individual pages on our website.

These efforts are part of an evolving programme to broaden accessibility and outreach to the d/Deaf and disabled communities, particularly those who also identify as part of an Asian community. We plan on expanding access at the festival year by year.
