Join us for a free screening of The Queen of My Dreams, directed by Fawzia Mirza, for National Canadian Film Day on April 16, 2025, at 7 PM at Cineplex Scarborough Town Centre.
Azra (Amrit Kaur), a young queer Pakistani-Canadian woman, has always felt distant from her mother Mariam (Nimra Bucha). When her father passes away, Azra travels to Pakistan to attend the funeral, only to be confronted by memories and stories from a past she thought she knew. In flashbacks to the 1960s, a young Mariam (also played by Kaur) falls in love with Hassan (Hamza Haq), and their vibrant love story unfolds in parallel to Azra’s contemporary journey. As the film leaps across time and continents, the invisible threads between mother and daughter begin to reveal themselves.
A Canadian Screen Award–winning performance and a rich visual palette give this debut feature the flair of Bollywood and the emotional depth of an intergenerational drama. Director Fawzia Mirza crafts an exuberant, romantic, and emotionally honest story about family, identity, and healing.
This film is co-presented by Toronto Reel Asian International Film Festival and Reel Canada.
